Our pets matter so deeply to us because they live with us in a way that is both simple and profound. They share our daily rhythms without judgment, expectation, or conditions. A pet doesn’t care about your productivity, your mistakes, or how the outside world sees you they simply love you unconditionally.
Grieving the loss of a pet is grieving a relationship built on care, presence, and mutual dependence. It’s grieving a being who loved you in the only way they knew how—and who trusted you completely. That kind of bond leaves a real wound when it ends but the memories live on with us.
Tibetans believe the prayers of these flags become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade from exposure to the elements and the wind blows through them. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, our own healing can begin, our hearts can mend and find room to love another four legged friend. When we send our feelings on the wind we trust nature to turn our memories from sadness to gratitude for having loved and been loved so unconditionally.
May your pain be short and your memories long.
